She was hiding credit card balances from him…

Hey again {{First Name}},

I know...it's been a while.

This summer has been full in the best way. Between international travel, a growing counseling caseload, transitioning to being a family of 4 (we had another girl!), and admittedly watching far more World Cup soccer than I planned, writing kept getting pushed to the side.

But behind the scenes, Mouni Finance has been anything but quiet.

I took a short pause from the newsletter because I wanted to rebuild Mouni from the ground up—not just cosmetically, but intentionally. My goal has always been to create something that helps people feel calmer, more confident, and more in control of their financial lives. I wanted the brand to reflect that.

So here's what's new:

  • Everything has been moved to a new platform, every newsletter has been migrated, and the behind-the-scenes infrastructure has been rebuilt so Mouni can continue growing for years to come. Check it out: www.mounifinance.com

  • A new logo: The old logo helped me get started. The new one represents where Mouni is headed. The compass isn't about telling you where to go—it's about helping you discover your own True North and giving you the tools and support to confidently move toward it.

  • Everything now follows the same idea: financial growth isn't about perfection—it's about taking the next step. Think of me less like someone giving directions from the sidelines and more like a Sherpa helping you navigate the climb. Check out the new Mouni Money Map

  • The Mouni App has also received several major updates. The free version is more capable than ever, while Premium automatically syncs your accounts and transactions. And as always, your financial information stays private—I never see anything you enter unless you intentionally invite me into your finances through coaching.

With all that said...

Let's get back to why we're really here.

Recently I sat with a financial coaching client who discovered their partner had been hiding credit card balances.

At first glance, it looked like a debt problem.

It wasn't.

The First Mistake We All Make

Whenever someone tells me they've uncovered hidden debt, secret spending, or financial dishonesty, my first instinct is to solve it.

Create a better budget. Track every transaction. Share every account. Build a better system…maybe by using Mouni.app?

Those are good ideas, but they're rarely the first thing that needs attention.

Because if someone feels they have to hide money, there's usually something underneath the spending. Fear. Shame. Embarrassment.

The belief that, "If they really knew, they'd be disappointed in me." Or they might fear the consequences of their actions.

In this case, one partner had fallen back into spending connected to online gaming and gambling. They weren't simply hiding purchases.

They were trying to hide the feelings attached to them.

The Conversation Beneath the Conversation

The other partner had a completely different emotional experience. The hidden balances weren't just numbers. They represented broken trust. Suddenly, every previous lie, every old argument, every promise that "this won't happen again" came rushing back all at once. Questions followed immediately.

"Have we actually made any progress?"

"Can I trust them?"

"Do I stay calm? Do I confront them? Am I just teaching them there are no consequences?"

Money has a unique way of pulling old wounds into the present. That's why conversations about finances often feel much bigger than dollars and cents. Many of us think we're arguing about money when we're actually talking about safety, trust, security, or feeling valued.

Practical Strategies

Only after slowing down did we begin talking about systems. Because healthy financial systems don't create trust. They simply protect it.

Some practical next steps looked like:

  • Creating full financial transparency instead of relying on memory or honesty alone. Use an app such as Mouni.app, Monarch Money, or other finance apps.

  • Reviewing accounts together on a regular schedule instead of only after something goes wrong.

  • Designing a system where neither partner has to "discover" financial surprises.

  • Recognizing that accountability isn't punishment, it's support. Ensuring the implementation of grace and benefit of the doubt without feeling taken advantage of.

Good systems reduce the opportunities for secrecy. They don't replace difficult conversations, but they make those conversations much less frequent.

Let’s Shift the Money Conversation to Emotions

Whether you're married, single, just starting your financial journey, or decades into it, I think there's a principle here for all of us.

Financial health isn't just about managing money, your 401(k), or spreadsheets.

It's about creating an environment where honesty feels safer than hiding. Money represents safety to many people, and it’s an emotional topic.

Sometimes the most important financial question isn't:

"How much did I spend?"

Rather it could be:

"What made this feel difficult to talk about?"

Money has a way of revealing what's happening beneath the surface. When we become curious instead of defensive, that's often where real change begins.

If this resonated with you, or you've found yourself avoiding a financial conversation you've been meaning to have, I would genuinely love to hear your story.

Just hit reply.

I read every email, and many of my future newsletters begin with conversations like yours.
